Building Community That Fosters Sobriety and Mental Wellness Through Thoughtful Conversations and Musical Performances

Sober Sessions is a series of musical experiences in order to build a judgment-free, sober community for folks who find difficulties participating in an industry that's dominated by and heavily rooted in alcohol and substance misuse. We'll provide a diverse swath of musicians and artists to perform for sober community members and, before free performances, start the conversation with a panel discussion about the important role music plays in one's recovery, mental health and physical health alike. Mocktails will be available at all events as well (at least one performance will be held at The Phoenix which is an alcohol and substance free space. The only cost for entry is 48 hours of sobriety).

Substance misuse knows no socioeconomic status nor does it concern itself with gender identification, race, or beyond. Everyone is affected, which makes our events all-inclusive. In past events, we've opened up the pre-show panel discussion with the artists to the audience to break the fourth wall and create community between the performers and audience members alike. We're humans first and we're striving to treat one another accordingly.

ABOUT SOBER SESSIONS

For sober musicians and music fans, going to a concert can present a serious challenge. With drugs and alcohol being normalized and even glorified in the music industry, many believe that going to a show puts their sobriety at risk. Venues rely on liquor sales to turn a profit, performers can often be paid in drink tickets, and a hard-partying lifestyle is encouraged to maintain a rock star persona.

Enter Sober Sessions, a new concert series presented by nonprofits The Phoenix and Music Minds Matter with help from the Denver Music Advancement Fund.
